Chinese Narrative Traditions

This is an introductory lecture to Chinese narrative traditions, from the early period to our time. We will examine how history writing, anecdotes, stories of the fantastical and supernatural, and oral performances eventually gave rise to late imperial romances, and how these narrative traditions have influenced contemporary East Asian literature and pop culture, including TV series, films, animations, and video games.
